Studying in Italy and bringing your family with you

Are you planning to come to Italy to study and want to know if you can bring your family with you?

The answer is yes: non-EU family members of a student visa holder in Italy are entitled to a residence permit for family reasons, provided certain conditions are met.

What do you need to bring your family to Italy?

First of all, you must have a valid student visa for at least 1 year. Then, you’ll need the most recent family certificates, suitable housing in Italy, a certificate of habitability, sufficient financial means, among other things. This list is not exhaustive, and the required documents may vary depending on various factors, such as the Italian city where you will live, the number of family members, and their nationality.

Where to apply for the residence permit for family members?

Once you have all the necessary documents properly notarized, legalized, apostilled, and/or translated, your family members can apply for the residence permit for family reasons. This process can be done at the local post office or police station, depending on the case.

When submitting the application, the applicants will receive:

A. a receipt that will allow them to stay in Italy while the residence permit card (permesso di soggiorno) is being processed

B. an invitation letter for an appointment to take fingerprints at the respective police station (Questura)

What benefits will your family members have?

- they can stay in Italy beyond the 90-day limit of a tourist visa

- once the permit is obtained, they can work in Italy without restrictions

- they can travel to other Schengen countries for up to 90 days within a 180-day period
