What happens once the application for Italian citizenship has been submitted, either at the consulate, the Municipality, or before a Court in Italy, and it is officially granted?

Obtaining Italian citizenship entails a series of rights and obligations

Once Italian citizenship has been obtained, it is necessary to complete a series of formalities. The applicant also undertakes a series of obligations and acquires certain rights.

In the following diagram we present the main milestones and steps that follow the granting of Italian citizenship.

Steps after obtaining Italian citizenship

1. Citizenship registration, registration in the AIRE and passport application, depending on the method of obtaining it

Judicial route:

  • register the final judgment through the corresponding Italian consulate
  • the consulate will send:
  • certified copy of the final judgment
  • certified copy of your birth certificate (returned by the Court) to the Municipality of the Italian ancestor for registration
  • formalization:
  • when your birth certificate and other vital documents are registered with the municipality, you can be formally considered an Italian citizen.
  • register in the AIRE (Registry of Italian Citizens Residing Abroad) through the corresponding Italian consulate
  • apply for a passport at the consulate without having to travel to Italy

Municipality in Italy:

  • upon approval of the application:
  • Apply for a passport at the Questura (local police station)
  • If you are going to continue residing in Italy, you can apply for the "Carta d'Identità"
  • If you return to your country, you must register with AIRE through the corresponding Italian consulate

Consular route:

  • receive official communication from the consulate confirming your citizenship
  • register with AIRE through the same Italian consulate
  • apply for a passport through the same Italian consulate 

 2. Obligations and rights

  • Military: you will not have to do military service, since since 2001 it is completely voluntary for any Italian citizen
  • Taxes: no taxes are paid for citizenship, only for residence in Italy

  • freedom to travel, study, work and reside in any Member State of the European Union
  • participation in Italian elections:

National: registration in AIRE

Local: if you live in Italy

  • access to consular services:
  • passport renewal, notary services, etc.

4. Residing in Italy

  • registration in the municipality:
