Delay in the implementation of the Entry/Exit System (EES)

Update on the EES implementation

Delay in the implementation of EES due concerns by Germany, France and Netherlands

Due to concerns raised by Germany, France, and the Netherlands, the EU has postponed the introduction of the new biometric entry-control system intended for non-EU citizens, which was initially scheduled for November 10, 2024. The concerns from these countries stem from the fact that their border systems were not sufficiently prepared for the implementation of the system.

November 10, 2024, has been already ruled out as a definite launch date by the EU Commissioner Johansson since the implementation of the system is very complex and a gradual implementation, allowing a phased transition to the new protocols, is considered to be necessary.

A reminder: what is the EES?

The EES is a new system that aims to automatically record the dates and locations of individuals entering the territory of EU Member States that have adhered to the system. With the last launch date canceled, the new system—which should enhance the EU’s border management and security—is now estimated to come into effect at a later date in 2025.
