Information updated as of 2026
As of April 1, 2026, the Working Holiday Agreement between Italy and Japan is officially in force, marking a significant milestone in the bilateral relations between the two countries. The agreement, already ratified by Italy through Law No. 136 of September 17, 2025, and published in the Official Gazette, is now being concretely implemented, opening new opportunities for young Italian and Japanese citizens.
The program is aimed at individuals aged between 18 and 30 and allows them to obtain a special visa valid for up to twelve months. During this period, participants may stay in the host country with the primary purpose of traveling and experiencing the local culture, while also having the opportunity to engage in temporary work. These jobs, which do not require a separate work permit, are ancillary in nature and limited in duration, while still allowing for greater financial independence during the stay.
The initiative is part of a broader framework of cooperation between Italy and Japan, aimed at promoting youth mobility and direct cultural exchange. Through this arrangement, participants will be able to enjoy an immersive experience in the daily life of the host country, helping to strengthen mutual understanding between the two societies.
The number of available visas will be determined annually by the relevant authorities of each country.
With the effective launch of the Working Holiday program, Italy and Japan further strengthen their strategic partnership, focusing on young people as key players in the future of bilateral relations.
