Work permit for professional nurses: an insight

Requirements and steps for the work permit for nurses from outside the EU in Italy

The residence permit for professional nurses employed by Italian companies

Professional nurses from outside the EU can apply for a work permit in Italy at any time, as they are not subject to annual migration quotas.

The first requirement is the recognition of their professional qualification in Italy, a procedure managed by the Ministry of Health. Once approved, the employer or a temporary employment agency can apply for the work permit online.

Process Steps:

  1. Application for qualification recognition at the Ministry of Health.
  2. The employer submits the work permit request to the Immigration Office.
  3. Once the permit is approved, the nurse applies for a work visa.
  4. Upon arrival in Italy, they sign the contratto di soggiorno at the Immigration Office and apply for a residence permit.
  5. Registration with the professional board after passing an exam and an Italian language test.
  6. Start of employment.

The residence permit is granted for the duration of the contract, up to a maximum of two years, and can be renewed within the country. Changing employers is possible, but the nurse can only work within their profession.
