Referendum Cittadinanza Italiana 1920 X 640 Px

The Referendum to reduce years of residence for Italian citizenship fails to reach quorum

The proposal was annulled and the current laws will not be modified.

This means that the current rule remains in place: for non-EU nationals wishing to acquire Italian citizenship by residency, along with the other requirements it is still required to have accrued 10 years of uninterrupted legal residency

The proposal to shorten the residency requirement for Italian citizenship — from 10 years to 5 — has not passed, as it failed to reach the necessary voter turnout.

Last June 8 and 9 Italian citizens, whether living in Italy or abroad, were asked to vote on a number of matters which included the citizenship requirement of legal residency in the country.

Only 30,6% of the individuals having the right to vote exercised it therefore, without surpassing the 50% + 1 participation threshold, the referendum is invalid, and no changes will be made to the existing legislation.

This means that the current rule remains in place: for non-EU nationals wishing to acquire Italian citizenship by residency, along with the other requirements (knowledge of language, income and absence of criminal record) it is still required to have accrued 10 years of uninterrupted legal residency in Italy before being able to lodge their application for the acquisition of Italian citizenship.
