Who is entitled to apply for Italian citizenship by residency?

Requirements and conditions

Foreigners who have resided in Italy for a minimum amount of time set forth by the law may be entitled to apply for Italian citizenship, in particular:
- 10 years of legal residence for non-EU citizens
- 5 years of legal residence for refugees, stateless people and foreigners over 18 years of age adopted by Italian citizens
- 2 years of legal residence for foreigners whose father, mother, grandfather or grandmother are or were Italian citizens at birth
- 4 years of legal residence for EU nationals
- no minimum time of legal residence for those who have worked for the Italian State for at least 5 years, in Italy or abroad
Applicants must prove the availability of a minimum income for the 3 years preceding the application, absence of criminal convictions and charges in Italy and in the foreign countries of birth and residence (starting from 14 years of age), knowledge of Italian language at least at B1 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages and integration into the Italian society.

How to apply for Italian citizenship by residency

Procedure and timing

The citizenship application shall be filed through the web portal Ali of the Ministry of the Interior together with the supporting documents.
Once the application has been filed, Italian authorities have 24 months extendable up to 36 months to process it and issue a decision.
Should the application be approved, the applicant will be summoned to take the citizenship oath before the Italian Municipality of residence.
