No work authorization (nulla osta al lavoro) is required for this visa, which must be requested directly at the Italian Consulate in the applicant's home country.

The working holiday visa allows you to work in Italy. No work authorization is needed to be hired; the employer simply has to file the mandatory notification with the relevant authorities.

Article 27 of the Consolidated Immigration Act (D.lgs. n. 286/98, art. 27 par. 1 lett. r) includes the "working holiday" category, which allows young foreign nationals to engage in occasional work or research activities in Italy under youth exchange programs, without being subject to migration quotas under the Decreto Flussi.

Who can apply for the visa?

This visa is intended for citizens of countries with bilateral agreements with Italy, such as Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, Hong Kong, and Canada (which signed a new agreement on November 1, 2022). It applies to young people between 18 and 30/35 years of age, aiming to promote cultural exchange through an extended stay.

How to obtain the visa?

No work authorization (nulla osta al lavoro) is required for this visa, which must be requested directly at the Italian Consulate in the applicant's home country. Specific requirements are set out in the bilateral agreements and typically include proof of accommodation in Italy, a declaration from the applicant certifying their intent to travel to Italy and work temporarily to supplement their financial resources for the stay, as well as health insurance.

Residence permit

The residence permit must be requested within the first 8 working days after arriving in Italy at the police station (Questura) and is valid for a maximum of one year.

Permitted work

The working holiday visa allows you to work in Italy. No work authorization is needed to be hired; the employer simply has to file the mandatory notification with the relevant authorities. The permit cannot be renewed or converted into another type, but it allows working for up to 6 months in total, with a maximum of 3 months for the same employer, except for specific cases such as the agreement with Canada, which permits working for all 12 months.

Limits and new categories
There is an annual limit on visas, as established by bilateral agreements. In the case of the agreement with Canada, new categories have been introduced:

  • Working Holiday: For those wishing to travel and work temporarily.
  • Young Workers: For individuals with a work contract related to their professional training or field of study.
  • International Internship: For students enrolled in post-secondary courses completing internships related to their studies.
