How can the Italian citizenship be lost?

The Italian citizenship is currently regulated by law 91/1992 according to which the loss of the Italian citizenship can occurr in case of will of the person concerned or as a result of sanctioning measures.
The loss by will of the person concerned can happen when the person cumulatively:
- acquires or already has another citizenship
- resides abroad
- spontaneously and explicitly declares to renounces the Italian citizenship
The loss of the citizenship as a result of sanctioning measures occurrs when the person concerned:
- does not abandon an office covered for another State or international organization when requested by the Italian State
- during war time, served the enemy State, acquired the citizenship if the enemy State or covered a public office for the same
- acquired the Italian citizenship by adoption by an Italian citizen and the adoption is revoked for indignity of the adopted person

Who is entitled to reacquire the Italian citizenship in case of loss?

Those who have lost the Italian citizenship may reacquire it following different pathways:
- by declaring the will to reacquire the Italian citizenship and establishing their residence in Italy within 1 year from the formalization of such declaration
- by moving to Italy for at least 1 year, unless they declare their willingness to not to reacquire the Italian citizenship
- by declaring the will to reacquire the Italian citizenship, if the person is employed by the Italian State
- by performing military service for the Italian State after having declared the intention to reacquire the Italian citizenship

The re-acquisition of Italian citizenship is not allowed in the following cases:
- in case of revocation of the adoption (requested by the adopted person)
- if the Italian citizen, during war time with a foreign State, served the enemy State, acquired the citizenship if the enemy State or covered a public office for the same

Special case of reacquisition of citizenship by descent

Those who, under Law 555/1912, lost their Italian citizenship —for example, by becoming naturalized citizens of another country before August 15, 1992— and who were born in Italy or have resided in Italy for at least two consecutive years, may submit a declaration of intent to reacquire citizenship starting from July 1, 2025, and no later than December 31, 2027.

Special cases of Italian citizenship acquisition

Foreigners who were born in Italy, if they reside continuosly in the Italian territory until the achievment of 18 years of age, become Italian citizens by declaring their intention to acquire the Italian citizenship within 1 year from the legal age.
The declaration of the will to acquire the Italian citizenship shall be filed to the Municipality of the place of residence of the applicant.
