On March 5, the Ministers of Home Affairs of the European Union approved a new timetable for the implementation of the Entry/Exit System (EES) and the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS). Thus, the EES is expected to begin operating in October 2025, while the ETIAS will do so in the last quarter of 2026.
The Entry/Exit System (EES) is a digital platform that will allow the registration of the entries and exits of third-country citizens traveling for short stays. This system will be applied every time they cross the external borders of the 29 European countries that implement it. Its purpose is to modernize border management in the Schengen area, gradually facilitate controls at border crossings and prevent identity fraud. In parallel, the ETIAS travel authorization will be a mandatory requirement for travelers who do not need a visa to enter the EU.
Gradual introduction of the entry/exit system
At the same meeting on 5 March, EU Home Affairs Ministers also backed the Council's proposal on the gradual introduction of the EES. Once approved by European lawmakers, the 29 countries involved will gradually adopt the system over a period of six months. This approach will allow border authorities and the transport sector more time to adjust to the new procedures.
Next steps
Once the EU regulation on the gradual introduction of the EES is formally adopted and the remaining member States confirm their readiness, the European Commission will set the exact start date, in line with the timetable agreed by Home Affairs Ministers on 5 March.
